PART 3 – It's not about who you are

Yesterday we talked about Jesus, the Deliverer. He’s the One who asks, “How can I help you?”

The bible says this.

Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us.

2 Corinthians 1:9-10

Here's what's happening. Andrew essentially says to Simon Peter, “We have found the Messiah. Christ, the deliverer. Peter, let me be blunt. You need deliverance. Frankly, you’re a hot head. You’re impatient. You’re always the first one who gets mad when we don’t catch fish.”

Look at the first thing that Jesus does with Simon. He changes his name from Simon to Peter, which means rock.

Now make no mistake – Peter was anything but a rock at this time. He was impulsive and unstable. But read the book of Acts. By the time Jesus gets done delivering him, he is the pillar of the church.

So … why would Jesus build His church on a hothead? Why would he rename such an unstable person as “Rock”? Jesus named him not for what he was, but for what he would be. That’s how Jesus works!
